Since completing her PhD in 2015, Dr Steiner has organised or participated in over 30 community outreach, advocacy, engagement, and fundraising activities, and is now mentoring others to do the same.


Aug, 2018           Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Event for GPs, South Western Sydney Primary Health Network: “Dementia: from prevention to management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia”

Description: Delivered a CPD-accredited event, with clinical collaborator Dr. Mark Hohenberg and carer Mrs. Nancy Russy, on behalf of South Western Sydney Primary Health Network for over 30 GPs on the identification of mild cognitive impairment and the prevention of dementia in primary care.

Description: Organised and hosted an Ageing Research Think Tank to set ageing research priorities in Greater Western Sydney with over 60 key internal and external stakeholders including government, industry, health care workers, primary health networks, local health districts, and members of the community.

Description: Opinion piece on the expected increase in the number of people living with dementia in South Western Sydney.  The article details an innovative approach led by Dr Genevieve Steiner to deal with the influx in dementia cases.  Published on the social media platform LinkedIn as a channel of distribution and engagement; article has had > 260 reads.

Description: An interactive workshop delivered to 15 people caring for somebody with dementia.  Presented the latest evidence and discussed strategies on how to live well with dementia.

 

Apr, 2017            Presentation, NSW Vietnamese Elderly Friendship Association: “What is dementia?”

Description: A presentation on dementia (what dementia is, treatments, and prevention strategies) that was organised through Anglicare.  Over 200 seniors from the Vietnamese community attended.  The presentation was translated into Vietnamese by an interpreter.

 

Mar, 2017            Presentation, Geriatric Grand Rounds, Campbelltown Hospital: “Mild cognitive impairment: Current research perspectives on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment”

Description: Invited presentation to the Geriatric Grand Rounds at Campbelltown Hospital that was attended by over 20 medical and nursing staff.  The presentation was recorded and made available online for clinicians who could not attend.

 

Mar, 2017            Community Engagement, Year 12 Society and Culture Class, Magdalene Catholic High School

Description: Visited Mrs Nancy Russo’s year 12 Society and Culture class to discuss different research approaches that could be taken for the students’ Personal Interest Projects (PIPs) including research project design, ethics, and strategies for dealing with conflicting results and large quantities of data.  Mrs Nancy Russo is a carer for her husband who has dementia; they both participated in one of our research projects.

 

Feb, 2017            Fundraising, Alzheimer’s Australia Memory Walk & Jog

Description: Assembled two teams that participated in the Illawarra and Western Sydney Alzheimer’s Australia Memory Walks, which together raised close to $1,000 for community services for people living with dementia and their carers.  Our team was photographed by the Illawarra Mercury, which has a monthly readership of 390,000.

Nov, 2016           Presentation, Myrtle Cottage, Ingleburn: “Complementary medicine for dementia: The good, the bad, and the unknown”

Description: A presentation on the evidence of efficacy of complementary therapies for dementia.  This presentation was part of an information session for carers of people with dementia.  Close to 30 people including carers, people with dementia, and staff from Myrtle Cottage attended.

Description: An interactive workshop with a colleague and PhD student that covered the latest evidence on healthy brain ageing, including published data collected from residents at the IRT Links Seaside, pragmatic strategies and activities that promote healthy ageing, and opportunities to participate in upcoming research projects.

Description: A speed-dating event that was part of the opening night of the Sydney Science Festival where members of the public ask questions to scientists.  The opening night of Sydney Science Festival was sold out and attended by more than 1,000 people.

Description: Visited a consumer group at Alzheimer’s Australia North Ryde to receive feedback on intervention design for a Tai Chi randomised controlled trial.  Participated in a weekly Tai Chi class and gave an informal presentation on research findings.

 

Jun, 2016             NICM Professional Education Seminar, Liverpool Hospital: “Chinese Medicine: Evidence, Research, Practice”

Description: Facilitated a workshop on evaluating evidence on Chinese herbal medicine from randomised controlled trials.  Around 15-20 health professionals attended.
